    Mini J&E

So it may seem that the adventures of this Brooklyn couple got a whole lot less, shall we say, adventuresome. That’s not true! We have continued to do fun things, we’re just . . . bad about blogging them. One main reason that we’ve had a bit less time for blogging is that Jason got a job at Makerbot! But luckily that has perks of its own…

    Fun with 3D Printing

Not only does he have unfettered access to Replicators to print anything from a little sheep to the members of his gnome army, but we could take advantage of one of the things offered at the brick and mortar store: a 3-D bust of our heads! So a few weeks ago, we took a little trip to the Makerbot store in NoHo where we had our heads photographed—and later rendered into a 3-D file that we could print!

    J&E - Printed!

The store is full of cool printed objects, from three-dimensional rotating puzzles to a display of the Robohand, a hand that was printed for a man who lost his and for children born with Amniotic Band Syndrome. Everything is made out of plastic in the Replicator, two different types (PLA or ABS). If you ever find yourself in the NoHo area of New York be sure to stop in, say hi and get your head scanned too (it’s free and fun)! Pro-tip: wearing a hat doesn’t really render well and glasses can be hit or miss.

    Artists Creating a Mural

Years ago, Erin edited a book on the San Francisco murals, and though she’d visited SF multiple times and stayed nearby many times, she’d never seen them until this trip. On our first day we took a walk down Clarion Alley, and on our last day we strolled down Balmy Alley—not to mention seeing all the murals on random buildings in the Mission. Clarion Alley, we’re told, is the less “savory” of the two streets, more likely to be the host of a drug deal than a painting in progress. When we were on Balmy Alley we actually saw two women painting a new mural. In general we’d say that Clarion’s murals were the more “current”—messages that seemed more contemporary and concerned with current events—but on Balmy the murals were traditional, depicting the ongoing struggles of the people who painted them.

    Park Avenue Armory

    Park Avenue Armory

There are so many hidden gems in New York City. How is it that a block-large armory still exists on the Upper East Side? The Park Avenue Armory has been repurposed into a flexible exhibit space. We went there recently with our friend Holly to see a piece called The Murder of Crows, a musical experience unlike any we’d ever been to before. The three of us were completely blown away by the piece, and we recommend it if you get a chance to see it. Sadly, no photos were allowed within the main Drill Hall, so we couldn’t capture the cavernous space, empty but for the few chairs in the middle and the scattering of dozens of speakers. But oh, how we both wanted to sneak photos! Instead, we were able to explore the exterior rooms and hallways, all perfectly preserved. (Some events can be photographed, though, like the quilt installation Erin attended there last year, Infinite Variety.) We’ll be keeping an eye on future programs and will definitely be back.
